Extending avocado shelf life through precision

Fresh produce waste costs the retail sector significant amounts each year while driving unnecessary resource consumption. Through controlled ripening and data-driven quality assurance, food tech company Swedlog demonstrates how extended shelf life can become both a commercial advantage and a sustainability solution.
Avocados are among the most sensitive products in the grocery industry. Even minor variations in temperature, transportation conditions, or ripeness can quickly result in food waste at retail level, in restaurants, and ultimately in consumers’ homes. According to Anton Ekman, Sustainability Manager at Swedlog, sustainability therefore needs to be embedded directly into the core business.
“We use the innovative Softripe™ ripening technology to monitor and control the ripening process. The result is avocados – and now also kiwis – with consistently uniform quality, optimal taste, and more than double the shelf life,” he says.
Reducing waste throughout the value chain
Swedlog’s sustainability efforts are rooted in measurable impact across the value chain. When products last longer and quality becomes more consistent, the risk of waste and product write-offs decreases. Greater consistency also creates confidence among restaurants, retailers, and consumers, strengthening long-term trust in the product.
Ekman explains that the benefits extend far beyond the retail shelf. Every avocado or kiwi that is consumed rather than discarded means that resources such as land, water, energy, and transportation are used more efficiently. It also enables growers to generate greater value from products that have already been cultivated and transported.
Data-driven sustainability
The impact is also evident among Swedlog’s customers. For salad chain Holy Greens, Swedlog’s avocados have contributed to a 70 percent reduction in returns while reducing food waste by between 50 and 60 percent. Improved predictability has also enabled avocados to be included in a wider range of menu offerings.
Swedlogis currently in an expansion phase and is building a more systematic sustainability framework focused on measurement and performance tracking throughout the value chain. By collecting data on quality, shelf life, and product waste, the company aims to quantify its impact more clearly from producer to consumer.
“Forus, sustainability is not about isolated initiatives. It is about building a business where superior quality and longer shelf life reduce waste at every stage of the chain. The most sustainable fruit is the one that is actually eaten.”
